Cody Deaner: Just Giv’er

by Spencer Love January 8, 2021
written by Spencer Love

If pure exuberance was to be personified, it would almost certainly take the form of the man known as Cody Deaner. Though his recent – and excellent – on-screen turn may showcase a different side of him, the IMPACT Wrestling star is truly one of the good guys of wrestling. His enthusiasm for both the industry and the people within it knows no bounds, and few, if any, would argue that Deaner is an asset to any promotion, locker room, or television program.

For all of his accomplishments inside the squared circle, however, no championship or award can compare to the incredible work Deaner has done outside of the ring through his charitable endeavor, Giv’er for Charity.

“‘Giv’er for Charity‘ is a fundraising campaign aimed at raising money for a variety of amazing Canadian charities,” states the official Giv’er for Charity website. “Cody Deaner partners with various charities who are in need of funds and helps them raise money selling merchandise at his professional wrestling events and speaking engagements. Cody then donates 100% of the proceeds to the charity of choice.”

Though the comparison may be a lofty one to make considering that the Port Bruce, Ontario native has picked up over 15 titles throughout his career, it’s one that makes his dedication to his charitable work all the more impressive.

“Just because of the nature of independent wrestling and the way it is, I was just meeting a lot of kids,” Deaner commented when we spoke late last year.

“I think it has something to do with the fact that I love kids, and I approach wrestling remembering what I loved about it as a kid. I think young children are drawn to that.”

“I do [the fundraisers] alongside my fans and kids that I’ve made a connection with,” he continues. “We raise money for causes that are important to them (and) things that have helped them out in their life.”

Since founding Giv’er for Charity, Deaner has used his platform to raise thousands for charities including the Landsdown Children’s Centre and the Rumball Camp for the Deaf.

“I started in 2018, and to date, I’ve raised over $16,000 for different charities,” he concludes. “That is not something that I planned or really expected to happen.”

“But, it’s something that really motivates me.”

A First Public Foray

Though Giv’er for Charity was born over three years ago, Deaner first forayed outside of the professional wrestling sphere four years prior to that with his first public speaking engagement.

“A former teacher, a former coach of mine that coached basketball to me in high school, asked me if I would come and speak at my old high school,” Deaner reminisced. “They were having this conference and they knew I was well-spoken just from wrestling, and also remembered me from high school. They knew that was in me, and just asked me to do [it]. It went really well.”

Did it ever. As his former coach had surmised, Deaner was a natural.

There are few differences between a Cody Deaner speaking event and the Cody Deaner you see in professional wrestling, save for the wrestling itself; much like you see weekly on IMPACT, his sheer zest for life and boundless enthusiasm can take even the meekest of audiences from silence to a full-blown uproar in a matter of minutes.

In fact, he says, the worlds of pro wrestling and public speaking comparable are comparable in more ways than one.

“The same way there’s a world of wrestling, there’s a whole circuit of public speaking, and there’s speakers that do it for a living,” Deaner laughed. “They asked me to come back again. Then, I got asked to go to another school, [and] I just kind of started to snowball. I started to get to know people. I just started to network the exact same way I did when I got into wrestling, and all the skills that I had learned for networking and building my brand that I did in wrestling, I applied it to speaking.”

His efforts paid off in spades. Soon, Deaner found himself as in-demand for his speaking appearances as he was for his professional wrestling. Not only did it allow him to continue to partake in his love of travel – “I’m a road warrior,” he comments – but it also allowed him the opportunity to interact with more of the fans he holds so close to his heart.

“Kids are drawn to me when I go into a room, whether it’s speaking at an elementary school or when I go down to the ring,” commented Deaner. “I’ve just been meeting a lot of really interesting kids through my travels: kids that have had a rough go in life, kids that are deaf, or kids that have special needs, or kids that are autistic, and I have so many stories of just these kids that I’ve made a connection with.

“

“I just kind of got this idea one day that I want to give back to those kids somehow.”

Giv’er for Charity

Deaner’s vision began to take form in 2018 in the founding of his own charity.

Well, kind of.

“[Giv’er for Charity] is something that just kind of happened by accident,” states Deaner. “I didn’t want to start my own charity, because there’s already so many great charities out there, I just decided to kind of be the middleman fundraiser for all these amazing charities that are already happening across Canada. My idea was like, if we can just raise a couple hundred bucks for a couple charities, that would be great and maybe keep this connection with these kids.

“

The first charity Deaner took the opportunity to support was a local Special Olympics powerlifting team. Deaner’s fundraising began with selling merchandise at the pro wrestling shows he would appear on. “Sometimes I would go to the show and rather than thinking about how many t-shirts can I sell at the merch table, I was like ‘how much money do you think I can raise at the show?'” he states.

The experience was cathartic, to say the least. Of course, the impact of the funds raised was evident, but it was the experience of meeting those impacted that truly hit home for the IMPACT star.

“I raised [funds] for their team and actually dropped the money off at one of their practices,” reminisced Deaner. “We all lifted weights together and they all enjoyed showing off for me and displaying their strength on the bench press.”

“It was so awesome. They were so appreciative of the money I raised for them and so appreciated me showing up to hang out with them. It was pretty special.”

It was the first of many. Since launching his charity, Deaner has impacted countless lives through both raising funds and directly impacting lives with his public speaking, including his compatriots inside of professional wrestling.

“I’ve had many fellow wrestlers tell me they are inspired by my charity efforts,” Deaner begins. “And, I’ve had a few anonymous wrestlers donate VERY generous amounts of money to both the Rumball Camp for the Deaf and to the Community Living Centre in Oshawa.”

“I was blown away by their generosity. And it just confirmed what I’ve known for many years… wrestlers are a tight-knit family that will really band together when there’s a worthy cause.”

And, of course, every dollar raised comes with a story. When it comes to charitable endeavours, every tale told is sure to tug at the heartstrings. Some, however, just hit a little closer to home.

“I met this young fan, his name’s Christopher, and he’s deaf,” Deaner comments, slipping into full storyteller mode. “The first time I met him, we had a great conversation at the merchandise table. His dad was having to do some sign language for him. I talked to him and I said, ‘hey, let’s do some work together, Christopher. Is there any charities that you know of?’ He told me about an amazing place called the Rumball Camp for the Deaf. It’s a summer camp that gives these kids an amazing experience. Kids from across Canada and not all kids could afford to go. So, me and Christopher raised money so that more kids could go to the summer camp.”

He laughs before continuing.

“I started raising this money for the Rumball Camp for the Deaf,” Deaner reminisces, “I met Derek Rumball, who’s the son of [Camp for the Deaf founder] Bob Rumball. [Derek] says to me ‘I think it’s really special that I’m doing some fundraising with you and you’re connected with this camp. It’s really cool. It makes me feel like my dad.’ I’m like ‘okay, what do you mean? Was your dad a wrestling fan?’ He goes, ‘oh, moreso!'”

“The person who helped my dad start the Rumball Camp for the Deaf was Whipper Billy Watson.”

To Deaner, the association with the Canadian wrestling legend was yet another sign that he was heading in the right direction.

“That was like the universe speaking to me and telling me how I’m doing the right thing, man. I’m doing the right thing. So the Rumball Camp for the Deaf has a special place in my heart.”

However, even when aligned with a literal icon, Deaner is clear-eyed about who Giv’er for Charity is all about.

“I mean,’ he finishes, “seeing young fans and being able to help out some kids that are in need, it really puts things in perspective.”

Deonna Purrazzo on Her Run with IMPACT, Match with Taya Valkyrie

by Spencer Love January 7, 2021
written by Spencer Love

Deonna Purrazzo joining the IMPACT roster certainly made waves throughout the professional wrestling scene. Her impact – no pun intended – was immediate, and within months of her joining the promotion she had captured the IMPACT Knockout’s Championship.

Joining a new promotion is never an easy task, though, and there was certainly the risk of things not quite going according to plan. Purrazzo recently joined Spencer Love to discuss her run in IMPACT Wrestling thus far, and if all has gone according to plan for the Virtuosa.

“[It’s been] a little bit of both, I guess,” commented the Virtuosa on if her run with IMPACT had gone as she’d envisioned thus far. “I think – I didn’t really have any expectations. You know, when I got fired, it was kind of like, ‘okay, what’s the next step,’ and IMPACT was knocking right away, like, ‘hey, we want you here. What can we do to make this work?’ I’m just so fortunate that they were like, ‘we want to put you at the top right away.'”

However, that wasn’t due to any politiking or creative control on the part of Purrazzo, she says.

“I think people assume that when you leave WWE or you leave another company, it’s just like you have a list of demands,” she laughs. “‘I want this, and I want this, and I want to right this wrong,’ like, I was just like, ‘I’m cool to do whatever! And if you’re positive that I can fulfill your expectations, then let’s do it and I’ll give it a try.’ IMPACT has just been so gracious with the trust that they put in me, and I’ve been able to, I think, knock it out of the park every time.”

Of course, Purrazzo’s signing with IMPACT set the stage for the Virtuosa to face off for the first time ever with former Knockout’s Champion, Taya Valkyrie. On January 16th, the two will finally face off one-on-one in what can truly be described as a dream match.

It’s an endeavour that excites Purrazzo.

“Taya’s someone who I have never gotten a chance to be in the ring with, so whenever she’s vying for a Knockout’s Championship opportunity, I’m ready! I’ve said on numerous other interviews that that’s a dream match for me.”

“I’m excited for that and the possibility of that.”

Women’s Dusty Rhodes Classic: Teams We’d Love to See

by Spencer Love January 7, 2021
written by Spencer Love

Last night’s episode of NXT programming played host to one of the bigger announcements to come from the black-and-yellow brand since their move to network television last year. In the coming months, the black-and-yellow brand will host its first-ever Women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, quenching the thirst that wrestling fans have had for years for a women’s edition of the nearly-annual tournament.

Though no details were announced last night, wrestling fans worldwide are already salivating at what the Women’s Classic could potentially mean for NXT. The men’s tournament has already played host to a number of the brand’s biggest heel turns and major swerves, and with NXT’s women’s division in need of a bit of a soft reset, the Women’s Dusty Rhodes Classic couldn’t have come at a better time.

Of course, every wrestling fan has their favourites, and yours truly is no different. Though the endless buffet that is the WWE has plenty of different flavours of wrestling to choose from, there are a few teams I’m perhaps pining for a bit more than others in this year’s inaugural edition of the Women’s Dusty Rhodes Classic.

Let’s take a look at some of them, shall we?

Shotzi Blackheart + Ember Moon

While 2021’s Dusty Rhodes Classic may be the first for the women, this year will mark the sixth tournament for the men since it was introduced in 2015. Since the tourney’s inception – and stop me if you’ve heard this one before – WWE and NXT has made a habit of utilizing singles stars in haphazardly thrown-together tag teams to help fill out the tournament’s brackets. In fact, three of the five winners of the Dusty Rhodes Classic have consisted of teams that traditionally haven’t worked together often, if at all, prior to the tournament. While these teams admittedly usually turn out to be anywhere from solid-to-great, it often seems unnecessary given the already incredible tag teams that NXT is fortunate enough to feature.

When it comes to the women, however, alliances aren’t quite so clear-cut. While babyfaces and heels are prone to aligning simply because, well, they’re good or bad guys, there aren’t a ton of true teams or factions on the female side. That being said, there are a few singles stars that could be feasibly paired together in this year’s tournament, and none more so than Shotzi Blackheart and Ember Moon.

While by no means an official duo, Blackheart and Moon teamed together at December’s NXT: WarGames event. Even in defeat, the two looked excellent, and there’s certainly a storyline to be built in the two looking for redemption together after what was a hard-fought loss at last month’s show. Frankly, as two of the promotion’s most popular singles stars, there HAS to be a way to work them both into the tournament, right?

While it may seem like taking the easy way out, sometimes the easiest path is the right one to take. Putting two of the most charismatic, athletic talents on the NXT roster together to draw some eyes to a major tournament? Seems like pro wrestling 101 if you ask me!

Dakota Kai + Raquel Gonzalez

For the better part of a year, Dakota Kai and Raquel Gonzalez have been linked at the hip. Since Gonzalez made her debut in February, many have compared the duo to the early-’90s pairing of Shawn Michaels and Diesel, with Kai representing the brains to Gonzalez’s considerable brawn. In their time as a pair, the two have picked up victories over Rhea Ripley, Teagan Nox, Ember Moon and picked up the winning pinfall in last month’s WarGames event. Truly, there are few more dominant pairings throughout the entirety of WWE right now, providing the duo the perfect reason to enter the inaugural Women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. When a team’s getting compared to one of the all-time greats, at some point they have to prove it, right? Unfortunately, for all of their singles success, rarely have Gonzalez and Kai had the opportunity to showcase their prowess as a team. When they have, they’ve dominated – look no further than the aforementioned WarGames tilt.

It makes too much sense for Kai and Gonzalez to enter this year’s tournament. Not only that, but I’d expect them to go far.

Jessamyn Duke + Marina Shafir

Both Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir have been with WWE for the better part of three years. While the duo have made a number of appearances on NXT programming throughout their time in the promotion – their time as Shayna Baszler’s sidekicks most prominent among them – the two have yet to establish themselves as full-time roster members of the black-and-yellow brand.

Perhaps there could be no better way to do so than through the cozy confines of a tag team tournament?

Much like previous MMA-stars-turned-pro-wrestlers Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler, both Shafir and Duke give an air of legitimacy that’s hard to capture in professional wrestling. It’s the kind of vibe you get from people you wouldn’t want to meet in a dark alley, or any alley, really, lest they kick your ass in front of all of your friends and laugh about it. Having your first true tour of in-ring duty during the Dusty Rhodes Classic may be a daunting task for some, but bringing in two legitimate badasses to refresh the division certainly isn’t the worst idea and especially given the (rumoured) impending departure of Rhea Ripley.

NXT’s in need of two people like Duke and Shafir. I can’t think of a better way to debut ’em.

The Riott Squad

Let’s start a Riott!

Both Liv Morgan and Ruby Riott have been steadily building momentum on Smackdown Live for the past few months. The two haven’t lost a match as a duo since October and are one of the only consistent female tag teams featured on WWE programming.

However, despite their popularity and their in-ring success, neither have found their way to any semblance of gold in WWE.

Frankly, few pairings are better equipped to hoist the 2021 Dusty Cup. Ever since making their main roster debuts, Morgan and Riott have been attached at the hip save for those weird few weeks at the end of 2019. The pair’s relationship is well-documented in WWE lore, even taking a large part of the focus of Morgan’s recent WWE Network special. Heck, even the simple fact that WWE brought the two back together in the midst of breaking up tag teams like The IIconics and Heavy Machinery should speak volumes about their potential as a pairing. They’re winning and they’re popular: why WOULDN’T you put the two on top?

If WWE really wants to solidify a long-term team here, they’ve got the perfect opportunity with The Riott Squad.

Indi Hartwell + Candice LeRae

Another pairing that makes all-too-much sense to feature, the duo of Candice LeRae and Indi Hartwell has to be one of the early favourites to win the entire tournament.

The now-Indi Wrestling has been downright excellent since officially aligning with the Gargano family nearly two months ago. Frankly, she’s taken to her brand-new attitude like a duck to water, player her role as the icy-cool heel to perfection.

LeRae, too, has undergone a revitalization of sorts over the past few months. Admittedly, her heel turn was slow to click for this writer, but once she hit the ground, she did so running. A breakout performance at WarGames truly solidified her as one of, if not THE, top women in the division, and after a few failed attempts at dethroning Io Shirai as the NXT Women’s Champion, it’d make all-too-much sense for the Poison Pixie to look to lock up some gold another way. With the momentum that both she and Hartwell have behind them, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them with a big ol’ trophy at the end of the tournament.

The Divas of Doom

Last year’s Dusty Rhodes Classic featured the shocking reunion of The Time Splitters. Despite their first-round loss, wrestling fans were blown away by the appearance. Why not reunite another classic duo under the NXT banner?

I don’t think there are any arguments that the team of Natalya and Beth Phoenix are one of the greatest tag teams of ever, regardless of gender. The two were truly ahead of their era, with both displaying incredible in-ring prowess at a time when perhaps it wasn’t as prominent in WWE’s women’s division as it is today. That fact in-and-of itself is likely enough storyline-wise to bring back the Divas of Doom: why wouldn’t two of the all-time greats want to mix it up with some of the best female tag teams of today’s generation? Natayla’s recent matches have more than proven there’s been no decline as far as her in-ring game goes, and Phoenix has looked outstanding in her Royal Rumble appearances and her WrestleMania 35 match for the Women’s Tag Team titles.

The Divas of Doom are still looking for their first major tag team accolade, and the chance of becoming the first-ever Dusty Cup winners on the women’s side is likely more than enticing enough for one more run.

Billie Kay

Could she reunite with former IIconics tag team partner Peyton Royce? Could she appear on commentary? As a special guest ring announcer? Frankly, I don’t care how we get her in there, but the world is better any time Billie Kay makes an appearance on WWE programming. Make it happen!

Who do you want to see in the 2021 Women’s Dusty Rhodes Classic? Laycool? Asuka & Kairi Sane? Another team we’ve neglected to mention?
