PCO chats Training with Georges St. Pierre, ROH’s Locker Room Leaders

by Spencer Love April 18, 2021
written by Spencer Love

Whether it’s running 70 kilometre super-marathons or taking flip bumps to the floor from the top rope, no one would argue that PCO certainly goes above and beyond in trying to reach his goals.

That was something we chatted about as part of our upcoming conversation for Love Wrestling, and especially as it pertained to a certain Canadian MMA legend.

“You mentioned that you were training with George St. Pierre a while back,” I commented near the start of our recent chat. “Just take me through how he inspired you and continued to motivate you, because, you know, they’re very similar worlds between the UFC and professional wrestling, but obviously very different as well.”

“Yeah, I think George was one of the most disciplined athletes that I’ve seen around me,” replied the French Canadian Frankenstein. “When I trained with him, it was just training from morning to night, basically. We had done the workout training in the gym, bodybuilding type of deal where everything (was) for the strengths, and then we would go to his house, and then we’d run some sprints, and then we would run like – basically a bunch of sprints. I remember it was during December, it was super cold, and [there was] a lot of ice and snow. We would go like every day. And after that, you know, I would do my own thing. So he was going to striking coaches, and then he had his jujitsu course, and then – he had like four or five [training sessions] per day. [He] was non-stop.”

“I trained with him for maybe three months, and I learned so much. I learned so much,” continued the former Ring of Honor Champion.

“When I saw him having all the success that he had, to me, it was no fluke, no luck.

A lot of people, sometimes they think someone is lucky to have like great skills or anything like that. He worked for everything that he had. Even on his days off, he would reinvest this money. Let’s say he had a big fight and he could have two, three months off. He would just go on a trip [to] Thailand and just find a place to train there. Or, if he would fly to Japan for conferences and things like that, he would find the time to train.”

“He just loves it, though. I mean, [he’s] still got to be disciplined, but he’s very passionate about what he does. When you got the passion [for] what you’re doing, that helps a little bit. But, sometimes I’ve seen other pros that didn’t train hard. I’ve sometimes had the feeling that a lot of guys trained because they had to train. But, George, I felt like he trained because he liked to train. It was just the way he was built, just the way he built himself because it’s all about habits. It has to become a habit.”

Of course, there are a multitude of comparables between St. Pierre and PCO when it comes to work ethic, something I I noted to the Canadian star as we chatted. “I think a lot of people would look at yourself as someone in Ring of Honor who would be an example of that,” I commented to him. “[Someone] who’s constantly pushing [and] constantly trying to better himself. Who are some people that you look to in the promotion as motivators or locker room leaders to steal another cliche.”

“You see a lot of them but we don’t really – it’s hard for me to see someone in a dressing locker room or meeting or just [the] roster getting all together and to pinpoint the leaders. That’s not hard during a meeting, but I don’t have the chance to see them at home, how they go and what they do. Like, no one knows really what I do and what – you know, pretty much everybody’s on their own once you go back home. You can go to the gym on the road, but it’s not gonna show. I think the real question is what we do when there’s nobody watching us. I think that’s where the real challenge is. It’s not when someone is watching you and says, ‘okay, there’s people watching. I’m gonna step in the ring and I’m gonna show them that I work hard all the time.’ If you don’t do nothing at home, it’s not going to – I don’t think it’s gonna work. I think it’s all what you do when there’s nobody watching you. I like guys like Jay Lethal. He’s a good leade for Ring of Honor. I believe he’s very passionate about what he does and he knows what he’s talking about. So I really like Jay Lethal as a leader. I think he’s a cool guy, [with] good knowledge of the business and things like that. Matt Taven’s another one who takes a lot of lead in Ring of Honor. There’s plenty. Jay Briscoe was another leader. Both Briscoes, but Jay’s a little bit more verbal. There’s plenty of good leaders. I mean, Dalton Castle, there’s so many.

It’s hard to just – I don’t like to mention names like that because sometimes I forget one name and someone messages me!”

WrestleMania X8 Game Review!

by Gabe Foster April 16, 2021
written by Gabe Foster

WWE WrestleMania X8

Systems: Gamecube

Hello! It’s been a while! Seeing as WrestleMania season is officially behind us, the next two weeks will be dedicated to WrestleMania games to keep up the Mania spirit! The first one that we have lined up is the first in a long line of games for the Nintendo Gamecube: WWE WrestleMania X8 from 2002. This was the first WWF game to be changed to WWE due to the World Wildlife Foundation lawsuit. The packaging all says “WWE”, but once the game is loaded up, the giant WWF logo we all know and love greets you. This game laid the foundation for what was to come for future WWE Gamecube titles.

ROSTER

The roster that was in this title was top-notch, to say the least. Well…at least in my opinion. This has some personal favorites of my own!

  • Albert
  • Rikishi
  • Scotty 2 Hotty
  • Lance Storm
  • Test
  • Rob Van Dam
  • William Regal
  • Christian
  • Kurt Angle
  • Kane
  • The Undertaker
  • Ric Flair
  • Edge
  • Booker T
  • Steve Austin
  • Scott Hall
  • Kevin Nash
  • Faarooq
  • Bradshaw
  • Bubba Ray Dudley
  • D-Von
  • Matt Hardy
  • Jeff Hardy
  • The Rock
  • Hollywood Hogan
  • Triple H
  • Chris Jericho
  • Vince McMahon
  • Shane McMahon
  • Rhyno
  • Raven
  • Chris Benoit
  • The Big Show
  • Tajiri
  • Tazz
  • Lita
  • Stephanie McMahon
  • Trish Stratus
  • Stacy Keibler
  • Molly Holly
  • Jacqueline

DDP and Tommy Dreamer were originally slated for this game, but were sadly taken out.

GABE FUN FACT: This is the only game until WWE ‘13 that included all of the nWo under one game title. Also, it was the only time that Jeff Hardy would appear in a Gamecube WWE video game before his departure. Aside from WWE Crush Hour, but does that even count as a wrestling game?

Looking back and seeing as this is where it all started, why isn’t this game discussed as much? Well, it’s complicated. While it plays similar enough to future titles that people rave about, the gameplay was clunkier. The animations were nowhere as smooth as they soon became with WrestleMania XIX. The AI also struggles with this thing that I like to call, “can’t stay down disease”. The computer constantly no-sells your moves making it quite frustrating to have a normal match.  The models were decently made for their time on this system, but were the worst of the 4 games of this series. After you take the action outside of the ring, the creation suite was where I spent my most time as a child.

CREATION SUITE

You could make some decent create-a-wrestlers in this suite, and I say decent with a capital D. They sure do look rough, but they did include a feature that you could edit the moveset for the superstars that are already in the game to keep you busy if you wanted. Besides the faces always looking a bit awkward it was still enjoyable!

CHAMPIONSHIP MODE

The championship mode in this game was something that was both memorable and frustrating for me. Championship mode is where you take a superstar down a path to try and win a certain title. On that path, you face many opponents until you get to the title match. Once you defeat the champion, you take the strap for yourself and unlock a new superstar. Easy right? Well, personally this was a nightmare for me. I would fight my way until the end and once I defeated the champion…nothing would happen. I would spend so much time trying to unlock Raven with the Light Heavyweight Title path and yet he would never unlock. Why? I have absolutely no idea.

CONCLUSION

OVERALL: 5/10 This game has a great foundation. And it showed that with its future titles. But this one is very forgetful. Is it the worst game ever? Oh God no, far from that. But compared to it’s 3 sequels, it is the weakest of the bunch. Definitely the type of game to play once in your life, then only keep it for the collection.

Spencer Love Interviews: Rhett Titus

by Spencer Love April 15, 2021
written by Spencer Love

Just prior to the 500th episode of Ring of Honor Television, Rhett Titus joins Spencer Love to talk about historic moments in ROH history, his own beginnings with the program, being a part of a training class of two people, standout moments from Ring of Honor’s TV program and more!

HIGHLIGHTS
The backstage culture of ROH

SL: “Very cool. I know it’s jumping ahead a little bit, but it’s a casual conversation! How do you think you’ve maybe affected or how has the culture, I guess to use the buzzword for it, changed from your starting Ring of Honor to now? The wrestling product’s always been there. I don’t think many people would argue that. But, even interviews you’ve done with guys like Sean Ross Sapp, you’ve talked about it being apples and oranges now. So maybe take me a little bit through the history of those growing apples versus growing oranges.”

RT: “Yeah, no, it’s one of those things where everybody, like, kind of looks to me as like a veteran of the locker room and to me, it’s like, man, these 15 years just went by so quick. I’m still a hungry dude just trying to trying to get comfortable, you know what I mean? But, you can never get comfortable, because everything is always changing and there’s always new guys coming up and keeping you on your toes and that sort of thing. But for right now? Ring of Honor, man, I have to say it’s the best it’s ever been. The product that we’re putting out right now is absolutely amazing even with the limitations that the pandemic has put on us. We brought back to the Pure title and pure rules and that sort of thing, and that’s something that you really got to focus on. It’s a different level of thinking of pro wrestling. Even when you’re watching at home, you’re watching, you’re saying like, ‘how many rope breaks does this guy left have left on your TV screen?’ Those sorts of things. You’ve really got to – you can’t just like casually watch it. There’s strategies to it, and there’s psychology behind it. You definitely want to sit and watch it with a fine eye. But I mean, everything from the presentation to the matches to the commentators – Ian and Caprice, they’re best duo going today. Ring of Honor is really firing on all cylinders right now, so to be part of it after all these years and continue to be a driving force in the company. It’s a absolute – you know, pardon the pun, but Honor.”
