Johnny Devine on Eric Young, Their “Stu Hart vs. Andre the Giant” Feud

by Spencer Love August 17, 2021
written by Spencer Love

While everyone is (rightfully) quick to point out Johnny Devine’s excellence inside the squared circle, my lasting impression of my conversation with the former X-Division Champion was simply his excellence in storytelling. Yes, of course, that applies to his in-ring work as well, but throughout our entire recent chat for Love Wrestling, I found myself marvelling at his ability to tell one outside the confines of the ring, too.

In fact, one of my favourite parts of our conversation was a simple-yet-outstanding story involving Eric Young and a pair of incredible impressions.

“There were times before shows and stuff like that where we had four hours of an afternoon sitting on [our] fucking thumbs,” Devine began. “So, we would end up down at the ring while people are going on with matches and stuff like that. People who aren’t doing other stuff, we’d roll around, and we’d act like fools.”

A smirk crept across the former X-Division Champions’ face.

“Eric Young and I used to sell out the front row while we did a skit of Stu Hart versus Andre the Giant.”

I had to laugh, assuming that the story wouldn’t go any further. “I promise I’ll only ask for that one when we’re done recording,” I chuckled.

Rather than shy away from the story, the former Team Canada star doubled down and immediately kicked into what’s become one of my favourite stories told to me as part of an interview.

“I’ll give you the biggest high spot!” he replied. “So, we built this feud up for months at one point. It was awesome.” Instantly, Devine began his spot-on Stu Hart impression ‘because every once in a while I would cut a promo on Andre,’ he said, before instantly shifting to an homage to Andre the Giant, saying ‘and he would cut a promo on Stu.

‘”

As I howled with glee, Devine continued.

“The office got wind of it, and one day, we decided to do like a pre-pay-per-view, pay-per-view pre-show match, strictly for the boys. Stu versus Andre. One of the best parts of that – I can’t remember, I think we were still in Florida for this one – but we did entrances, and each one of our entrances took long enough for like three or four other people to pass us and go on with a match. They’d come back and we’re still coming down the ramp.

Another match has gone on and [then] they’ve gotten to the back, and then the third match is going on when we’ve reached the stairs kind of thing. We’re in this race. It was awesome.”

“I’m just sitting here picturing Eric Young in the Andre singlet riding a motor scooter to the ring!” I laughed.

“There was some gold there,” chuckled Devine to conclude.

“There was some gold there. We had some fun with that.”

Jeff Jarrett on Owen Hart, Winning the IC Title, Great IC Champions

by Spencer Love August 16, 2021
written by Spencer Love

The relationship between Jeff Jarrett and Owen Hart has been well-documented to this point. In a recent edition of the My World with Jeff Jarrett podcast, Double J went in-depth into his long-standing relationship with the King of Harts from his first match against Owen to his relationship with the family today.

Frankly, the podcast is essential listening for any fan of either generational wrestler.

However, after listening to the podcast, I wanted to ask Jarrett about a subject he’d only briefly touched on during his show: his winning of the Intercontinental Championship just days after Owen’s untimely passing. I asked Jarrett about the victory and what it meant to him amongst his myriad of championship wins.

“You can’t really put it into words,” began Jarrett. “At that stage in my career in ’99, I’d been wrestling 13, 14 years and won the regional titles, and [I’d] go to Japan, or Puerto Rico or Texas, and then obviously, the first time I won it against Razor. I went into, as you said, I went into really deep, some really deep discussions about that, obviously, as you’re aware on My World.

“

“I didn’t really process at the time, but I know the overwhelming of emotion because [of] what was going on prior to that,” Jarrett continued somberly. “Me and Owen had been teaming, and he was doing the Blue Blazer. I’ll just say that the Intercontinental title wasn’t in the cards, or wasn’t in the plans. So when that opportunity hit, it was overwhelming and it played out right on [for] the whole world to see. So of course, it was special.”

The Intercontinental Championship

Jarrett then went on to describe the prestige of the Intercontinental Championship, describing it as one of the most important titles in the world.

“To me, it’s still, in a lot of ways, the second most prestigious belt in the world. And yes, there’s a RAW belt and a Smackdown belt, and no disrespect any of that. But the Intercontinental title for me, and this is for me, has such a special lineage from I mean, we can go on and on, but Curt Henning and Roddy Piper and Bret [Hart] and Shawn [Michaels] and Razor [Ramon] and just, you know, Stone Cold, and Rock and just how it was through the years. And then in later years, The Miz I think gave it a lot of respect.”

“It’s a special title in the annals of professional wrestling,” concluded the two-time Hall of Famer. “But, for me to win it under those circumstances. I mean, Spencer, you hit the nail on the head, hey, it goes without saying. I can’t really put it into words how special it was.”

by Spencer Love August 16, 2021

Multi-time Hall of Famer Jeff Jarrett joins Spencer Love to discuss his new podcast, My World, CM Punk’s potential return, Owen Hart, Chyna, working with Larry the Cable Guy, his positive outlook, and more!

HIGHLIGHTS
Working as Larry the Cable Guy’s wrestling coordinator

JJ: “Blue Collar Comedy! That was a lot of fun. Just the different opportunities that come out of being around this business. I did a cameo in Spring Breakers. My kids are Selena Gomez fans, and we go and Spring Breakers was NOT a Disney movie if you’ve ever seen that.”

SL: “To say the least!”

JJ: “When you look at that, or Blue Collar Comedy, Life with Mikey, Head of State with Chris Rock, all the different kinds of movies and TV shows and opportunities. Traveling over to Abu Dhabi and eating a meal with the royal family. Just the opportunities, literally, it’s just crazy, sort of the life I’ve been blessed with. Blue Collar Comedy [and] Larry the Cable Guy, that is one – I can say this, he’s as funny off-camera as he is on.”

CM Punk’s potential return

“You know, Punk, as a performer or promoter [what] I’m most excited about is [that] to say that absence makes the heart grow fonder pretty much goes for everyone. In this type of scenario, it’s been a minute since he’s stepped into the world of professional wrestling with people. [He did] the UFC and that, but him reentering the industry and yes, he did some FOX stuff, but I mean, what you’re tabling here? It’s gonna be a special moment because not many times do you see a guy that rose to his heights that dipped out and is now returning.”

“The curiosity factor alone is through the roof, and then, it is how’s it going to be done? [How’s] the timing going to be done? Who’s going to be that first opponent? How’s the crowd going to accept him, or his opponent, or the story? Just all those kinds of things. And then, when I put on my executive producer cap, you start thinking.”

“I mean, it’s one of those things, and I went into this couple of weeks ago on the podcast, our industry is so cool, and I think it’s one of the biggest things that attracts me. 52 weeks a year, and look, yes, I saw somebody said people need time off. I agree. But, the content being produced 52 weeks a year is fantastic. There’s always next week. So, what’s happening next week, is Punk coming next week, or the following week, or the following week? No matter what happens, we’re all gonna sit back and either praise it or whatever it may be. But, then, there’s going to be the next week, and then the next week. That’s kind of really cool. I’m excited. Like I said just a second ago, the business in so many ways, is super red hot. I couldn’t be more excited.”

Jeff Jarrett Spring Breakers

Jeff Jarrett on Larry the Cable Guy, Spring Breakers

by Spencer Love August 14, 2021
written by Spencer Love

Two-time Hall of Famer. Seven-time Intercontinental Champion. Founder of TNA.

There are quite literally hundreds of accolades that apply to Double J, Jeff Jarrett, including two that may not be so front-of-mind as his exploits in professional wrestling: actor and wrestling coordinator.

Fear not, dear reader: we’re here to explain. As part of my upcoming conversation with the wrestling icon, I asked him about his experience working on Larry the Cable Guy’s Hula-Palooza Christmas Luau – yes, great name, we know – and the legend went in-depth into his experience not only with the famous comedian/repairman but a few of his previous acting roles.

“We’ll get back to pro wrestling in a second.

You mentioned TV, you mentioned movies, I had to ask and I don’t really have much context outside of the Wikipedia page.

But, what was it like working with Larry the Cable Guy as his wrestling coordinator?”

Double J burst into laugher.

“Blue Collar Comedy! That was a lot of fun,” he chuckled. “Just the different opportunities that come out of being around this business. I did a cameo in Spring Breakers. My kids are Selena Gomez fans, and we go and Spring Breakers was NOT a Disney movie if you’ve ever seen that.”

“To say the least!” I exclaimed.

“When you look at that, or Blue Collar Comedy, Life with Mikey, Head of State with Chris Rock, all the different kinds of movies and TV shows and opportunities. Traveling over to Abu Dhabi and eating a meal with the royal family. Just the opportunities, literally, it’s just crazy, sort of the life I’ve been blessed with.

“

Jarrett chuckled again before concluding.

“Blue Collar Comedy [and] Larry the Cable Guy, that is one – I can say this, he’s as funny off-camera as he is on.”
