The career of Sami Zayn has seen lots of changes in recent months, but one thing that has remained with him is his finishing move. The Helluva Kick, a running Yakuza Kick with his opponent prone in the turnbuckle, earned its name through a happenstance of mispronunciation, WCW magazine, Denny’s and one of AEW’s lead commentators.
Ahead of his main event match with Roman Reigns at Elimination Chamber last month, Sami shared how his version of the Yakuza Kick earned its name, for the first time ever, with Love Wrestling.
“If you want the actual history here, I don’t know if I’ve ever actually told it in an interview.” Sami begins. “When I was a kid, I had a WCW magazine, and I was reading some match results. It said Chris Jericho defeated Syxx – or maybe it was the other way around – with a hell of a kick.
It was written “helluva” like that, and I thought it was a Helluva kick, so I thought it was a type of kick.”
It wasn’t until he shared this anecdote with a peer that Sami’s Yakuza Kick would earn the variant name. “So I told this story to Excalibur, who now does commentary on AEW every Wednesday. I told this story to him at dinner one time at Denny’s after a PWG show, then we started calling the running Yakuza kick in the corner that I would do at the time, we started calling it a Helluva kick. So that’s actually the real history of that name.”
Sami also shared his thoughts on returning to Montréal, Laura Jane Grace of Against Me, and Sami For Syria. Tune in to the full video interview below, and please give a h/t to Zak Ralph for the transcription.

ARTomic Drop Spotlight | David Missio and the Sami For Syria Campaign Tee
Article updated 15/5, removal of links no longer valid.
As we always say, passion in the ring inspires passion on the page. Sometimes though, it’s leads to something more. The right piece of fan art catches the right attention from people with the right intentions. Such was the case with David Missio out of Toronto. You’ve likely seen his Dancing Sami piece. Not only celebrated by Sami Zayn himself but also adopted as the art on a campaign t-shirt from raising money for Sami For Syria.
I’m thrilled to announce the release of this limited edition “Dancin’ Man” T-shirt!
— Sami Zayn (@SamiZayn) April 17, 2021
100% of profits go to our #SamiForSyria mobile clinic.
Available this Monday on @PWTees, for one week only! pic.twitter.com/zh1pzttxLN
Before this article continues, I’d like to get something out of the way; this article is not paid for or sponsored by PWTees or any party. Simply put, if I can promote it in a small way, I’m gonna!
Like many young artists, David’s first forays into drawing were inspired by comic books, in particular, superheroes. “I collected almost all of the Batman titles in the late 80s”, says David, “my earliest influences were Norm Breyfogle, Jim Aparo and Kelley Jones.” Young David would also be finding his footing in the wrestling fandom as well. “My brother Erik and I would watch the WWF with my grandpa who would lurch and jump with every big hit or slam.”
Interest in wrestling may have waned and returned on and off, but art stayed with David. Producing wrestling-inspired art would be an inevitability, even if it only came later on. “Comics and wrestling were some of my earliest loves, but it has only been recently that I’ve gotten into real fan art.
” Not one for Twitter himself, David’s sister Sonja Cori Missio would tweet his early fan art (with his permission of course) while tagging wrestlers, getting the attention of Cesaro, Taz, Sting and many more. “Getting that kind of recognition has been really motivating.”
The latest in my brother's @WWE series and probably (/obviously) my favourite.

Likes and Retweets are lovely, but Sami Zayn was the first to shout out David’s work on social media, and it all stemmed out of a very silly segment. While a better part of the audience (rightfully) chuckled while watching Sami Zayn’s dance prowess on an April edition of Smackdown, David saw a muse. “Sami is a talent that will always pull me in with his energy and the Sami Dance brought a huge smile to my face. I know when I feel affected by something in wrestling, chances are somebody else has as well.” Boy, was David right.
— David Missio (@davidmissio) April 7, 2021
The piece got lots of love, including of course, from Sami himself.
Oh my God. I need this print.
— Sami Zayn (@SamiZayn) April 7, 2021
Actually, I need it as wallpaper for my powder room.
Artwork by @loingobernable pic.twitter.com/EBjcpH8DFC
Once Sami platformed David’s endearing piece, the merch questions came pouring in (none about wallpaper, unfortunately). Fans tweeted in reply that they wanted prints and shirts with Dancing Sami. Reading the replies and seeing the interest, David saw an opportunity to do some good in the world.
“Knowing his Sami For Syria charity was doing such good work, I took the opportunity to tweet at him to thank him for the shout-out and to suggest he could use the image to raise funds.”
A few days later, he would receive an Instagram DM from Sami himself, asking about making a shirt with 100% of profits going to Sami For Syria. “It was a no-brainer for me and I told him he could use it.” The turnaround would take a few short days. Sami put David in contact with Pro Wrestling Tees, who would slightly reorganize the art with David’s full support, and the campaign went live Monday of this week!
Get this limited run tee while you can!
— Sami Zayn (@SamiZayn) April 20, 2021
It features beautiful artwork by @davidmissio, printed on high quality American Apparel shirts (no sweatshops) and 100% of the profits go to #SamiForSyria mobile clinic to provide medical aid in Syria.
Get it here:https://t.co/lTLdmUe40r pic.twitter.com/9qPklvQJyl
When asked about Sami For Syria, David had this to say: “I’m a Child and Youth Worker, I take pride and pleasure in helping others and working towards improving my community through outreach efforts. Having my art be used to raise money for those less fortunate is a best case scenario for someone like me. Sami Zayn is one of the good guys and it’s an honour to be able to help out in a small way.”
The Sami Dance tee is available exclusively through Pro Wrestling Tees with 100% of profits going to Sami For Syria. The shirt is limited edition, and is only available until TOMORROW at 1:00PM EST.
Get yours! I ordered mine. I’m still waiting on news on the wallpaper though.
David Missio continues to practice art both as a hobby and as a mean to connect with the kids he works with as a Child and Youth Worker. He of course practices his fan art of some of wrestling’s finest, but also works on a series of facades of Toronto’s restaurants and venues as well as a focus on more sequential/comic based works. Most recently, he’s picked up a new medium. “I’ve also recently gotten into wood-burning and am excited by the new medium.”
TJ Wilson has transitioned nearly seamlessly since being forced to retire from in-ring action over five years ago. Since stepping into his backstage role, the former Tyson Kidd has exhibited the same flair for producing matches for other people as he did his own throughout his in-ring career. It’s earned him praise from fans and talent alike, as a few months ago, Wilson was touted as one of AEW star Dax Harwood’s favourite producers to work with through his tenure with WWE.
Wilson recently discussed the acknowledgement in our recent interview on Love Wrestling.
“Well, what’s so funny [is] I did an interview with somebody and it was a few days after he tweeted that,” Wilson commented. “What’s really funny, [and] I mentioned it there – besides maybe being the producer on a couple of live events, I don’t think I ever actually had like his matches specifically.”
“But, but, I’m always available to bounce ideas around,” he continued. “Once I get out of a meeting and I grab some food, I’m usually ringside. And yeah, I have my match or matches for that day, but it doesn’t – that doesn’t mean that I’m not able to talk to anybody else throughout the day, and I can only talk to the people I’m working with that day. That’s not the case. That’s not the case for any of us. That’s not the case to me.”
I’m not really sure if I like you that much, but you’re right about this. @itsjerrylynn is probably the best producer, along with @TJWilson, that I’ve ever worked with.
— Dax FTR (@DaxFTR) October 24, 2020
While WWE’s locker room has changed drastically since Wilson last stepped inside the ring, his experience on both sides of the business has allowed him to gain unique insight into the mechanics of putting a match together. It’s given him the belief of collaboration, not dictation over the course of his backstage career, which he says is his favourite part of his job.
“And I think being, you know, now it’s been five years, but when I first came back as a producer, it had been two years, two and a half years removed from being a wrestler, and I’d wrestled – now the locker room is changing a little bit and there’s guys that I haven’t wrestled, but at one point, I’d wrestled almost everybody in that locker room when I came back as a producer, so I kind of had a relationship with them. And I still do, obviously.”
“I think with a guy like – I just am always going to call him Dawson, but a guy like Dawson saying that about me, I think that just made me and him kind of sitting in the locker room kind of just bouncing ideas off each other or like me seeing a match of his and enjoying it and maybe just sort of throwing out my two cents, whether he asked me for it or not. But, I also don’t believe in dictator style. Like I don’t tell you ‘this is exactly what you’re going to do, and you’re going to go do it.’ When I was a talent, most producers were like that with me when I did have freedom and they didn’t – it wasn’t a dictatorship. So I’m gonna pay it forward, because that was the way I work best [was] when I was in situations where it was very ‘these are the orders.’ Sometimes I understand that these are specifically the orders. I get that. But, when I feel like it’s kind of not necessary – I try to work in the same vein as ‘hey, here’s some ideas I have. What are your ideas? Let’s try to let’s collaborate.’ I think honestly collaborating is my favorite part of the day.”
It’s not just the collaboration that Wilson loves, but the opportunity to do so with the ever-rotating cast of WWE’s Superstars. It’s something that the former Tyson Kidd gets the opportunity to do often with his consistently working with WWE’s women’s division.
“It’s very cool. It’s cool,” he says of getting the chance to work with so much new talent recently. “And like I said, when you see it click for somebody, it’s a very cool – like, I’ve trained people before, and you see it and you know, and now I’m seeing it on – I saw a little bit as a talent, helping people and working with people, and now as a producer, I see it often, to be honest. I see it often, and it’s a cool thing. We have unbelievable talent on all brands across everything, guys and girls.”

Full disclosure; I am on an Eddie Kingston kick, and can you blame me? Rhetorical question, because you cannot. About NFTs
As curator to this article I always strive to do right by artists, which I always thought would be limited to making sure I get artist consent and to credit them properly. I recently learned my responsibility extends beyond that. Nonfungible tokens, or NFTs, are a form of cryptocurrency where bitcoin traders can profit off of art and tweets without permission. Worse yet is the environmental damage these NFTs cause. The power used to mint these digital images on the blockchain uses somewhere between weeks and decades of the average EU or US citizen’s energy use.
I have taken the time to block many traders dealing in NFTs on both my personal Twitter and Love Wrestling Twitter in an effort to curb any harm this gallery may cause. If there is more I can do, please email me – zak@lovewrestling.ca – to let me know what exactly that is so I can better help protect your art.

“Plans change” is a phrase that most professional wrestling fans are familiar with, and almost always in a negative connotation. We’re all more than well-versed in matches being canceled, pushes being negated, or storylines being dropped at a moment’s notice.
However, the phrase isn’t always one to be taken negatively. In fact, those infamous changing plans directly resulted in Wilson’s appearance in the 2012 Money in the Bank Ladder match, which many people view as one of the former Tyson Kidd’s breakout performances in his WWE career.
Wilson recently detailed the story to me in our upcoming conversation on Love Wrestling.
“My theory, also, as a talent was that any Monday, the next Monday could be your Monday,” Wilson stated. “My go-to example of this is [that] I was sitting at a RAW once, and I see a bracket for the next day for Superstars. It was like myself against Yoshi, or JTG, or somebody, which is fine. I saw Jamie Noble, and I said, ‘hey, Jamie, if you get a chance in the meeting,’ I said ‘I understand how these meetings go,’ and I didn’t understand, now I actually do. I didn’t. I said ‘I kind of understand how these meetings go. If you get a chance, if you could try to get it switched to me against Trent’ – I always liked my chemistry with Trent – ‘if you can get that, I haven’t wrestled him in a few weeks, it’ll be fun.’ And Jamie’s like ‘yeah, no problem.
That shouldn’t be a problem.’
“So the next day, I’m working out and Jamie sends me a text,” continued Wilson. “He’s like, ‘hey, it’s you versus Trent on Superstars.’ I said, ‘awesome. Thank you so much.’ Then, he texts me back, like, 20 minutes later. I’m still at the gym and I see Jamie texted me. I’m like, ‘I wonder what this is about.’ He’s like, ‘actually match changed.’ I’m like ‘goddamn.’ And he’s like, ‘now, it’s you versus [Jack] Swagger, [and] you’re qualifying for Money in the Bank.'”
“So like, next Monday, it could be your Monday,” commented the three-time tag team champion. “That week, the day before, I didn’t think ‘hey, I think I’m going to be in the Money in the Bank this year.’ I didn’t think that, and then I was in Money in the Bank that year in Phoenix. So any Monday, next Monday could be your Monday. Or, if you’re a SmackDown talent, next Friday could be your Friday. It could be. You may not be booked this week. You may not have been booked the three weeks prior, but next week could be your Monday [or] your Friday.”
“I’m just speaking from my experience,” he finished. “This is how I view my career, my in-ring career. And, what I do now is all positive. It wasn’t perfect. There were a lot of things that ,you know, a lot of times I thought I could be utilized better. And that’s fine. That’s my opinion versus other people’s opinions.
And that’s fine. I’m not looking for someone to agree with me or disagree. I just know my value in the ring and where I thought I could, at the very minimum, get to. But at the same time, I also was wrestling for the top company in the world, and I’ve been there ever since 2006. So I can’t – at the same time, I also can’t complain about that. So, like I said, it wasn’t always positive, but you got to find little positive spins.”

Roman’s Sweet Whispers
Usually it’s RAW that leaves us with ample meme-material, but Smackdown is submitting it’s offering. In a tense confrontation between WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns and Royal Rumble winner Edge, Roman would lean in close and say something for the benefit of Edge alone.

HELLO MOTHER F***ERS!
This week, many AEW fans learned what joshi wrestling fans already knew. Buzz began when Maki Itoh was announced for the AEW Women’s Eliminator Tournament and grew further when she shut down Jim Cornette on Twitter (neither of those links are particularly safe-for-work, by the way), all of which underlined by the support of an existing and passionate fanbase. With that wave of fans discovering a new favourite wrestler and the Itoh Respect Order thrilled to see their queen succeed came a whole current of fan art!
