Taya Valkyrie: Five Matches We Need to See

by Spencer Love February 14, 2021
written by Spencer Love

While ‘hottest free agent in wrestling’ has become an all-too-common title over the past few years, there’s no doubting that the moniker more than applies to Taya Valkyrie.

At least, it did until Sunday.

As first reported by PWInsider, the longest-reigning Knockouts Champion of all-time is WWE bound and is expected to be announced as part of the next class to report to the Performance Centre.

There’s simply no understating how big of a signing Valkyrie would be for WWE, should the rumours turn out to be true. Much like she did with IMPACT, Valkyrie would stand as one of the promotion’s top stars, which should speak volumes considering the sheer wealth of talent currently contracted to WWE. There are few better female wrestlers on the planet than La Wera Loca by this writer’s money, and there’s a laundry list of potential dream matches to begin crossing off on each of WWE’s major brands.

There’s no time like the present to start doing it, right?

Sasha Banks

Let’s just get real, folks: when it comes to women’s wrestling, pretty well every wrestler’s dream list should feature Sasha Banks.

There’s simply no doubting that Banks represents the current woman to beat on WWE’s main roster. Simply put, few wrestlers of any gender could compete with the year that The Boss has had whether inside or outside the squared circle. There’s no doubt she’s the top dog in the women’s division, and if Valkyrie is looking to make a – heh – IMPACT in WWE, there’s no better way to do it than to go after the Smackdown Women’s Champion. Of course, the pair represent two of the best characters in wrestling right now, and their respective abilities on the microphone would make any potential promo battle need-to-watch. Inside the ring, there’s no arguing that they’re two of the top wrestlers in the world on merit alone, but given Valkyrie and Banks’ respective Lucha backgrounds, it could truly be an all-time classic.

Charlotte Flair

To be the man, you’ve gotta beat the man. Ric Flair said that, and it makes it ever-so-appropriate that the quote gives a ton of credence as to why Taya Valkyrie would want to challenge The Queen, Charlotte Flair.

The name Flair is synonymous with greatness in the WWE. Fight it all you want, but there’s simply no denying that the 2nd-generation Superstar is truly one of the faces of the company and, of course, one of its most successful stars.

A similar comparison could be made about Valkyrie’s time in IMPACT. Since signing with the promotion in 2017, there was nary a time that she wasn’t either carrying the Knockouts Championship or involved in a major feud. Even on a roster as stacked as the Knockouts, Valkyrie stood as one of the forefronts of the division.

Pro wrestling doesn’t need to be complicated. When you’ve got two athletes as talented as Valkyrie and Flair and their eerily similar last few years, how could it not be a dream match?

Io Shirai

Similar to how I wrote about Sasha Banks earlier, there’s no denying Io Shirai’s greatness over the past year. The Genius of the Sky is now sitting at over 260+ days of carrying the NXT Women’s Championship following her win at NXT TakeOver: Vengeance Day. She’s defended her title against the best of the best that the brand has to offer at, and while there are certainly challengers left on the table – lookin’ at you, Raquel Gonzalez – a debuting Taya Valkyrie immediately targeting the black-and-gold brand’s women’s title could lend her some immediate legitimacy in the eyes of the WWE Universe and those who perhaps didn’t watch her incredible IMPACT run.

Not only would a Shirai/Valkyrie cross all of those boxes, but simply, hot damn would any potential tilt would be a hell of a matchup for any wrestling fan. Can you really ask for a better introduction for Valkyrie than a killer match with one of the best in the biz?

Kay Lee Ray

Speaking of long title reigns…

Really, how can you argue against two of the longest-reigning women’s champions of all time in one match? Of course, we’ve talked at length already about Valkyrie’s record-setting Knockouts title reign, but what about Kay Lee Ray? At the time of writing, the Scot has ruled over the NXT UK Women’s Division with an iron fist, holding her championship for an incredible 530 days. Yes, much like I described Shirai earlier, KLR’s next challenger seems fairly set in stone in the form of Meiko Satomura; however, there’s no reason to let a silly little thing like logic get in the way of a dream matchup for yours truly!

It’s far from a secret anymore, but Kay Lee Ray has been rock-solid in carrying her championship for the better part of two years. However we get there, whether it’s this week, this month, or five years from now, a face-off between KLR and La Wera Loca will tear the proverbial house down.

Candice LeRae

Candice LeRae has followed the path of Bayley, Sami Zayn, and Johnny Gargano before her in taking what may have looked like ill-advised heel turns at their respective times and moulded them into the runs of their careers. Since shifting to the dark side, LeRae has been phenomenal both character-wise and inside of the ring. While it was previously unfathomable that one of the most beloved women’s wrestlers in the world could so effectively change alignments, it’s done wonders for her on the black-and-gold brand. Not that there was ever any doubt about her talent-wise, but over the past year, she’s truly established herself as one of the faces of NXT as many expected she would.

Given that, why wouldn’t she be an immediate target for Taya Valkyrie?

If you’re looking to make a statement in your first few weeks in a promotion, targeting their top rudo is a good way to do it. While NXT is chock-full of great heels, few would match up as well with Valkyrie as the Poison Pixie and could be a solid first feud for the SWA graduate.

What do you think, friends? Who do you want to see Taya Valkyrie square off with in her time in WWE? Let me know in the comments or on Twitter @SpennyLove!

QUOTES

On proving himself as a pro wrestler:

MB: “To me, that’s the most exciting part right now is I have a chip on my shoulder. I do. And people can take that any way they want, but that’s what motivates me, that’s what fuels me, and that’s what drives me. I’m determined to show people that the last three years isn’t what determines what people remember. That’s not my legacy. It also sucks, too, because some of my favorite matches I’ve ever had were on 205 and nobody saw them. And nobody watched them. Like I had – my match with I had a No DQ match with Tozawa that I absolutely love and I adore. I have – one of my favorite matches ever was against Rockstar Spud, or Drake Maverick, sorry. Some of those matches were my favorite, but it’s like nobody saw them. So now, I’m actually in a company where they’re putting me at the forefront. They’re allowing me to be myself, they’re giving me this opportunity, and I’m determined to show people that I want to be considered one of the best wrestlers. When people say, ‘oh, who’s the best wrestler that you [can] think,’ like if there’s a list, I want to be on that list. Some people can call it [and] say, ‘oh, that’s crazy. You’ll never be there,’ and that’s fine. But like, I didn’t get to where I am now by not believing in crazy things. You know, if I was like, ‘oh,’ you know, when I was 15 and I told my mom I was going to be a pro wrestler, everyone told me that was crazy then, and if I listened to them, I would probably be doing something I didn’t like right now. So yeah, I just, I set huge expectations for myself and I put the pressure on myself to achieve them. I’m happy that Ring of Honor has given me that platform to try to achieve it.”

Public speaking endeavours

MB: “Yeah, I just – you know, it’s funny. I had a talk recently with my wife when we were driving home. We were just kind of talking about my career and stuff, and we started talking [and] she’s like, ‘you genuinely like to help people.’ And I was like, ‘I do.’ Again, it makes me feel good. I enjoy it! It’s the most selfish, unselfish thing I do. Because I genuinely enjoy helping people. That’s why when you asked me ‘how did you feel about Tavan winning?’ Like, I was responsible in helping train Taven and, you know, we would travel to shows, and he would pick my brain and all this stuff. So to see that someone I helped achieve success, that makes me happy. My wife is the same way. We need more of that. We need more of that in life. There’s just, there’s so much animosity, and so much negativity, and for what? We’re all out to do the same thing. We’re all just trying to be good people, provide for our families, and survive. At the end of the day, that’s all we are. To me, I look at it and I’m like, we’re all just imperfect people trying to survive at the end of the day. Once you break it down like that, it’s like, I enjoy it. If you need help, I’ll help you. I enjoy talking to people. I enjoy – to me when someone comes up to me and says like, when you say to me ‘you’ve helped me with your story,’ and this and that, that means more to me than any world title I’ll ever win. I had a guy come up to me in Arizona one time at the Royal Rumble, and he was like this big jacked-up, dude, all tatted up, and I was like, ‘okay, what’s this guy gonna say to me?’ He came up and he was super nice and super soft-spoken. But then, he started – he broke down in front of me and started crying. He was just like ‘I just need to tell you this, because I didn’t think I’d see you here.’ He’s like, ‘but your story helped get me through my divorce. My divorce was my toughest time in my entire life.’ And he’s like ‘and you [and] your story helped me get through it.’ And I just – to this day, that was like two and a half years ago, but it moves me. I get goosebumps thinking about it to know that I can have that kind of effect. Knowing that I have a platform that reaches people. To me not using it in a positive way seems irresponsible.”

Chelsea Green on Earning the Canadian Destroyer, Training with Lance Storm

by Spencer Love February 12, 2021
written by Spencer Love

Chelsea Green has always been vocal about her Canadian roots and the unique situations that she’s found herself in due to being born above the 49th parallel. Of course, as a fellow Canuck, the country and it’s wrestling scene is always a large part of any conversation we have, and that was no different when we last chatted.

One specific Canadian-related piece I had to pick her brain on was the Canadian Destroyer made famous by Petey Williams. No matter your opinion on the move, it’s one of those things in wrestling that’s sure to spark a debate in any wrestling circle. However, in 2018 on an episode of The Wrestling Perspective podcast, Green was, in fact, handed down the Destroyer by Williams himself. With it rightfully being hers by all wrestling metrics, I asked her, how does she feel about the move being performed on such a consistent basis by so many wrestlers?

Green laughed.

“I have debated tweeting that because I remember on the podcast that was like a big moment for me! Like ‘did he just like really give it to me?'” she commented. “I mean it’s kind of unfortunate that this move that was so cool and that I almost won All In with is now just kind of a like thing, just kind of another move. Hopefully, that goes away. Wrestling happens like that. It happens in waves. And so, maybe we’ll ride this Canadian Destroyer wave and then everybody will get off it and it will become unique again. Who knows?”

“But I mean, everyone, just remember that I’m the only person who’s allowed, okay?”

As is often the case in pro wrestling, chatting about one legendary Canadian often leads to chatting about another. Whether we were talking about wrestling moves or the wrestlers themselves, that was the case more than once during our interview.

Another topic that came up with a Canadian flavour to it was Green’s past training in Calgary under Lance Storm. While we briefly touched on it during our first interview, it was something I was eager to dive deeper into her experience with the SWA. As she’s often said, her training at the Storm Wrestling Academy in Calgary wasn’t just her first experience in a wrestling ring, but foundational to her future success in the business.

“Now that you’ve had the opportunity to train with Lance and train in Japan and train with a lot of great individuals in the Performance Center, what do you think differentiates Lance Storm?” I began. “Looking as an outsider, it’s not like it’s a cookie-cutter program for lack of a better way to put it.”

“Whether it’s yourself or a Peyton Royce or an Oney Lorcan or a Rachael Ellering, you guys are all very different professional wrestlers. What do you think makes Lance great at giving the best of everything?”

“Well, here’s the thing,” Green began. “He starts from day one from the basics and he builds from the ground up. He doesn’t try to throw you in and teach you a move before you know how to lock up, or he doesn’t try to teach you how to be a character before you even learn how to wrestle. You start from ground zero, and you build this great foundation and you just keep building on that. I think that’s why everyone that comes out of Lance’s has a great mind for wrestling and is able to build a perfect, basic match.”

“That’s what I love about the Storm Wrestling Academy is that you can learn all the other fancy stuff everywhere else,” Green closed. “You can just try it, you can cross your fingers and hope that you can do a Frankensteiner or, you know, whatever it is, a Canadian Destroyer. Lance teaches you how to entertain and how to build a match that people are going to want to continue to see.”

Mike Bennett on Maintaining a Positive Mindset

by Spencer Love February 11, 2021
written by Spencer Love

Mike Bennett is perhaps as well known for his openness with his mental health as he is for his professional wrestling. That statement should speak volumes in and of itself, and especially when considering the immense talent that Bennett possesses for the sport.

Most are just as quick to recognize him as an influence on their own journeys with mental health as they are to note his influence on their in-ring work. While, personally, I’ve never experienced the in-ring side of things, Bennett’s willingness to share both his successes and his struggles have been monumental in my own attempts at personal development, and of course, I was excited to get the opportunity to ask Bennett directly about maintaining his positive mindset and his feelings on being an inspiration to so many.

“As a guy who’s very, very upfront about where his mind states at all possible moments,” I asked him, “how do you continue to keep yourself in a positive frame of mind and continue to keep yourself motivated that way?”

“It’s a battle, I won’t lie,” Bennett began. “I’m human. I think it’s a matter of just being honest with yourself and constantly telling yourself – like, to me, the industry is so negative and the fan base can be so negative sometimes.

But, I’ve reached a point in my life and in my career where I’ve realized that if someone is that unhappy with me, what is going on in their life that they are bringing that unhappiness and presenting it towards me? [I’m] someone they don’t even know, or they don’t even understand. But, it’s also a culture.”

He began to elaborate.

“There’s been this culture in professional wrestling of like – I mean, I remember when I was coming up the first time in Ring of Honor, and guys would tell me like, ‘oh, if you ever want to go to WWE, you just have to be an asshole. You’ve got to be a jerk. [You’ve] got to be,’ because that’s the culture. That’s the mindset. Vince always wants people that are just – they told me that when I was with the company, they’re like ‘Vince likes assholes. That’s just how he is.’ So it is a culture that that trickles down.”

“But,” he continued, changing course. “What I feel like is ever since there’s been this uprising of indie guys getting signed and indie guys kind of changing the industry. I mean, there’s a ton of positivity now, too, if you look at guys like [The Young Bucks], or you look at guys like Kevin Owens, or myself, there’s a lot of guys that are like, ‘no, this industry doesn’t have to be this way.’ This is our industry. Even Cody! Cody always says that this is our industry. The industry is for the guys and girls that step in the ring.

And we have the ability to change the mindset.”

Bennet paused for a breath before carrying on.

“I honestly think it was just always [that] there was so much negativity in the industry that it just trickled into the fans, too, until the fans started becoming negative,” the former ROH Top Prospect winner stated. “I’ll never understand why fans complain about some of the things they do. I’ll never understand why the fans will go to bat for a billionaire but will crap on the wrestlers that are unhappy. That’ll never make sense to me, but I don’t try to make sense of it.”

“But, what I can do is I can use my platform to try to spread some positivity and good, and it’s a struggle. I mean, I won’t lie. Daily I get comments about how terrible of a human I am, and some days it gets to me, and some days it doesn’t. But, what I have to do is just check myself at the door and remind myself like, ‘no, no. You’re okay. These people, they’re going through something, and clearly, they’re going through something,’ because for me, I’ve never in my entire life, I’ve never gone on Twitter and been like, ‘I’m gonna go attack someone I don’t know.’ It just isn’t my DNA. But I feel for these people, and I remind myself of that.

“So, you know, I think it’s a constant battle to try to stay positive.” Bennett concluded. “But to me, it’s a winning battle, and it’s an important battle, because I think especially more than just wrestling, in this world we’re living in during this virus and, like I said earlier, an insurrection and like this just political tribalism, it’s important to keep a positive mindset because this will consume you, and the negativity can consume you and you just have to fight back at it.”
