Censoring, A New Championship, and the Best in Recent Memes in Memesplash

Here at Love Wrestling, we endeavour to catalog all the memes and inside jokes of pro wrestling before they become overused and about as impactful as a superkick. Whether the meme was exclusive to our fandom or co-opted from the zeitgeist at large, you’ll find it here!

WWE Network to Peacock

After licensing their content to NBC a few months back, US subscribers of the WWE Network saw the WWE library moved to Peacock. On paper, it seemed like a no-brainer. Peacock is less expensive than the oft-touted $9.99, so subscribers would be able to binge The Office for the twelfth time between pay-per-views.

With the move, though, came the firm censoring hand of NBC.

As opposed to taking the Warner Bros approach of putting a disclaimer in advance of problematic content, Peacock opted to remove content of lesser-ethical standards. In and of itself, it’s an understandable decision, but with it was born them memes.

We all know who the true winner in all of this is.

The NEW IWGP Championship

This week, IWGP Champion Kota Ibushi was presented with a new championship, signifying the official unfiication with the IWGP and Intercontinental championships. And of course, the unspoken rule of unveiling a new championship belt is the subsequent comedy roast on Twitter.

Britt Baker vs Thunder Rosa

Almost two weeks back on AEW Dynamite, Thunder Rosa and Britt Baker made a statement. In a Lights Out Street Fight, Rosa and Baker would leave pieces of themselves in the ring and on a Wednesday night of strong wrestling, they would be all people would be talking about.

I started a section dedicated to this match in last week’s gallery, but I wanted to give artists more time to work on their art inspired by this incredible match, and I’m so glad I did, because LOOK AT THESE!

Austin March 16th says…

March 16th has become something of an unofficial holiday for the wrestling fandom due to the legendary slogan of one “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. While seeing the date laid out as month/day is frustrating to many of us, author included, oh my, we overlook it for the sake of celebrating the Texas Rattlesnake on 3/16. And oh my, do the fan artists celebrate Austin!

Britt Baker and Thunder Rosa put on a statement match in their street fight on the St Patrick’s Day edition of AEW. The match was violent, hard hitting, and mightily picturesque!

With that being said, this match only happened on Wednesday. I fully expect the match to be the muse of many more artists in the coming weeks, so consider this one and only image to be a teaser for next week’s ARTomic Drop!
